Sarah (name changed for confidentiality) is a 14 year old girl who has been referred to the Paediatric Pain Clinic by her GP. She has a 4 year history of abdominal pain which has been extensively investigated by gastroenterology, general surgery, gynaecology, urology and rheumatology with no specific diagnosis found.
Sarah has had patchy attendance at school over the last 2 years and has become more socially withdrawn. Her parents are increasingly worried about the cause of the pain, why it has persisted, and the impact missing school is having on her academically and socially.
