Case of the Month #35: Analgesia for Rib Fractures by Dr Mariam Latif

Published: 09/01/2024

Summary

In our ageing population, we can anticipate being called to see more patients with rib fractures. Assessment and alleviation of thoracic pain secondary to rib fractures is a key part of the overall care of these patients. Anaesthetists and Pain Physicians can expect to become increasingly involved in the pain management, including the provision of regional blocks. With the promotion of fewer, more basic blocks for the many, less technical expertise is required making regional anaesthesia more accessible to patients suffering from acute or chronic pain syndromes. Although more research is needed, the ESP block may well be a valuable advancement in the management of chest wall pain8.
