We are looking for a Medicines lead to be co-opted to the FPM Professional Standards Committee (FPMPSC) and corresponding to the FPM Board. 

The FPM Professional Standards Committee (FPMPSC) is responsible for pain medicine matters relating to the standards, good practice documentation, revalidation and events, policies relating to patient safety, competencies, clinical audit and doctors in difficulty. The Board is the governing body of the Faculty and is responsible for the overall strategic plan of the Faculty.

Members of the FPMPSC and Board should observe total confidentiality with respect to any discussions or papers considered confidential or sensitive, except where disclosure has been formally permitted.

 

The role and you

This role is for a medicine’s lead who will sit on the FPMPSC as a co-opted member. You will be responsible for advising on issues and updates on medicines, including any necessary updates on the opioids aware resource, external queries and media requests that come into the Faculty secretariat. As a corresponding member to the Board you will receive Board papers and be invited to attend meetings where issues related to medicines are to be discussed. 

The role is appointed for three years in the first instance, subject to review.

Person Specification

Those eligible must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Fellow, Associate Fellow, Affiliate Fellow or Member of the Faculty of Pain Medicine in active practice.
  • The applicant must have specific interest and skills in medicine management.
  • Have capacity to undertake the role.  It is recommended that potential members discuss their appointment with hospital colleagues and senior management to ensure they can dedicate the appropriate time to the role.

Desirable:

  • FFPMRCA.
  • Experience with enquiries from the media (the successful applicant will receive support from the FPM secretariat and RCoA communications team as required).

 

Support

On beginning your appointment you will join an enthusiastic and knowledgeable committee, with an encouraging Chair (FPMPSC) and Dean (Board).  They will support you from your first meeting and throughout the first year, liaising with you with regards to projects and work streams that require input.  The FPM Secretariat will be on hand to support you as you join the FPMPSC and with any subsequent workflow. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Reading all papers and emails relevant to the work of the Board and Committee.
  • Attending all required meetings and taking an active part in the discussions.
  • Taking on projects and work streams related to medicines for the Board and Committee.
  • Writing updates, proposals or other written materials in relation to areas of work.
  • Producing articles or content for the FPM newsletter, Transmitter, and the Faculty website.
  • Attending all meetings of their assigned boards, committees or working groups.
  • Upholding the high standard of the Faculty and its work.

 

Meetings

  • The  Committee meets four times a year with a 50/50 split of remote and in person meetings.  Travel expenses are reimbursed subject to the standard arrangements.
  • Typically meetings are from 13:00 – 16:00.
  • Members are expected to attend all meetings.
  • Members may not send delegates to attend in their place.
  • Disclosure of interest.  All Committee Members should disclose to the Chair any relevant conflicting interest of any kind (financial or otherwise) arising in relation to any item on the agenda.  

 

Meeting arrangements

  • In person meetings will normally be held at the Royal College of Anaesthetists in London.
  • The business of a meeting will comprise the minutes of the previous meeting, and may include presentations, progress updates on projects and initiatives, and the receipt of minutes of Sub-Committees that report to the FPMPSC.
  • Copies of the agenda and accompanying papers will be sent to members in advance.
  • Members can request the Chair to add items to the agenda in advance of the meeting.
  • All members are encouraged to feel able to speak freely and contribute to the discussions.
