Statement on Access to Palliative Care Bill

The Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Pain Medicine support the principles underlying the Access to Palliative Care Bill. The Bill addresses the significant variation across the country in access to palliative care services. There are excellent models across the country, which can form the basis of the future provision of equitable services for all.

This Bill would ensure the implementation of national standards of quality and consistency of access to palliative care which would be delivered locally, through clinical commissioning groups.

It is imperative that there is adequate education and training of healthcare professionals to increase the levels of awareness and understanding of the complex physical and psychological requirements of people with palliative care needs.
