Purpose of the exam

The FFPMRCA examination is consistent with the requirements for Fellowships of other UK Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties, and international Pain Medicine Faculties. The examination is not a replacement for achievement of the capabilities of Special Interest Pain Medicine Training as currently assessed. The examination is conducted in accordance with the highest standards. 

The exam comprises an Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper and a Structured Oral examination (SOE) (split into clinical and science sections). While it was the case from inception to October 2019 that both the MCQ and SOE examinations will be taken at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the MCQ will continue remotely henceforth. The Examination Calendars are available on the website, including any updates with regard to in-person or remote examination details.

Anaesthetic trainees undertaking training in the Stage 3 Special Interest Areas (SIA) of Pain Medicine within the 2021 curriculum must achieve its described competencies as assessed locally in order for this time to count towards achievement of the CCT in Anaesthesia. Anaesthetic trainees who obtain their CCT up to 31 January 2024 may remain on the 2010 curriculum and undertake Stage 3 SIA Pain Medicine Training achieving the competencies described with in the 2010 curriculum. Obtaining Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA) is not required for the CCT. 

Trainees commencing Stage 3 SIAs in Pain Medicine Training must pass the FFPMRCA examination in addition to achieving the locally assessed competencies in order to be admitted to the Fellowship of the Faculty.
